Police in Wales are trialling new biometric technology which can identify people on probation as they check in for alcohol tests.Dyfed-Powys Police in South Wales are using face recognition devices linked to breathalysers to conduct probation checks.The tool, developed by 3M, is being deployed alongside new GPS solutions which track the locations of offenders.Dyfed-Powys Police chief inspector Craig Templeton said; “We're the first police force area in the UK to trial the alcohol monitoring system”We're keen to find out if this new technology would provide a cost-effective and improved management of offenders throughout Dyfed-Powys, and ultimately lead to a reduction in the level of re-offending.”The pilot is currently being carried out with six offenders in the Dyfed-Powys Police area on a voluntary basis.
