Before the delivery of the Entry/Exit System, the deadline kept being pushed back to address technical challenges and interoperability with existing infrastructure. In this interview from 2023, Uku Sarekanno, Deputy Executive Director for Administration and Information Management at FRONTEX, said it was “important that the member states running the system were ready for final execution”.

The roadmap to delivering ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, and integration with the EES is under review and will be a huge talking point at this year’s Identity Week Europe. ETIAS is a mandatory digital security screening which will be introduced for citizens of visa-exempt countries (such as the UK, US, Australia, and New Zealand) entering Europe.

Don’t miss FRONTEX’s presentations on EES and ETIAS, exploring the operational shift from manual passport stamping to biometric registration, specifically the collection of facial images and fingerprints, and its impact on the border crossing process.

The sessions will break down the distinct purposes of the two systems—EES for entry/exit tracking and ETIAS for pre-travel security screening—and how their interoperability is designed to create a more comprehensive view of traveller movement.

EES and ETIAS are both the cornerstone of the EU’s modernised border management strategy, aimed at enhancing security, preventing irregular migration, and combating terrorism and cross-border crime.
