The International Centre for Migration Policy Development, which supports government migration management policies, has been a critical agency on Ukraine’s side in the context of war. We invited ICMPD’s Senior Project Manager, Vyacheslav Toporov, to talk about the implementation of their Ukrainian project, which has enhanced the resilience of Ukraine’s border management in the context of the war.
The project was born in late 2022, and since then they have built large capacity through investment in equipment and personnel, including delivering training for trainers and border guard officers.
The EU4IBM‑Resilience project is delivering specialised Training of Trainers for x-ray border scanner operations in Lviv. In addition to taking a people-centred approach to combating issues such as document fraud and human trafficking, the project has deployed self-service scanners, biometric recognition, and equipped 80 new border control officers with high-process technologies to facilitate border management, and effective asylum during a war. They expect to adopt more AI based technologies in the near future.
