Organisations in India will gain a more integrated route to obtaining and maintaining Legal Entity Identifiers as eMudhra Limited (eMudhra) incorporates LEI application and renewal into its established identity verification and onboarding processes.
The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation has today announced eMudhra’s appointment as a Validation Agent of Legal Entity Identifier India Limited in the Global LEI System, enabling this integration.
eMudhra will work as a Validation Agent of LEIL, a GLEIF-accredited LEI Issuer and wholly owned subsidiary of the Clearing Corporation of India Limited (CCIL). LEIL is currently the only LEI Issuer recognised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in India under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act. The arrangement will enable eMudhra to incorporate LEI application and renewal services into established identity verification and onboarding processes, reducing the need for organisations to complete separate checks across different services. LEIL will ensure issuance and maintenance of LEI records in accordance with Global LEI System requirements.
The appointment shows how globally standardised organisational identity can be embedded within existing digital trust infrastructure. This can help organisations identify themselves consistently across financial markets, payment systems and cross-border digital processes.
Headquartered in Bengaluru, India, eMudhra is a global provider of digital identity, authentication, and trust services for customers in over 35 countries. As India’s largest licensed Certifying Authority and a globally recognised public Certificate Authority, it brings proven expertise in public key infrastructure (PKI), electronic signatures, identity and access management, and certificate lifecycle management to the Global LEI System.
India has progressively incorporated the LEI into its financial infrastructure. In March 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a master direction consolidating existing LEI requirements for specified transactions in government securities, money market instruments, foreign exchange instruments and derivatives. All resident and non-resident participants undertaking transactions within the scope of the direction must obtain an LEI and ensure that it remains current.
This policy foundation has contributed to sustained LEI adoption in India. India became the jurisdiction with the largest number of active LEIs in January 2026 and recorded the highest growth rate of any jurisdiction during the second quarter. Integrating LEI services into established onboarding channels can support this demand while making standardized organisational identity more accessible across India’s financial ecosystem.
The development also reflects a wider shift toward consistent organisational identification in cross-border financial processes. The Financial Action Task Force revised Recommendation 16 in June 2025. The revision establishes standardised information requirements for certain cross-border payments and recognises the LEI as an identifier that can be used for legal persons. Jurisdictions are expected to implement the revised requirements by the end of 2030.
Alexandre Kech, CEO of GLEIF, comments: “Sustained growth in the adoption and application of the LEI in India over recent years shows how trusted, verifiable organisational identity supports transparency and interoperability across the global digital economy. Welcoming eMudhra as a Validation Agent will help meet increasing demand for the LEI in India and internationally, supporting regulatory compliance and promoting market-led innovation.”
Nand Kishore, Director of LEIL, comments: “We welcome eMudhra as a Validation Agent, a collaboration that marks a step forward in simplifying and accelerating LEI acquisition. By combining eMudhra’s operational network and digital capabilities with our decadelong expertise in issuing and managing LEIs, we are enabling organizations to fulfill their identity verification requirements seamlessly. This integration strengthens our validation framework and reinforces our commitment to data quality, transparency, and strict adherence to the regulatory standards. We look forward to driving the synergies necessary to scale trusted digital identity infrastructure, providing enhanced security and value to the broader financial markets.”
Kaushik Srinivasan, Co-Founder of eMudhra, comments: “Becoming a Validation Agent of LEIL in the Global LEI System is a natural extension of eMudhra’s role as a trusted Certifying Authority. It lets our clients obtain a single, globally recognised identity through a seamless onboarding journey – enabling faster access and supporting their compliance and cross-border growth.”
