A Fingerprint Acquistion Profile (FAP) level 60 Nomad module is just 8 mm thick and 100 mm in length and width. This type of technology has been used with other single-fingerprint readers and modules from Crossmatch-albeit at smaller scales-but this will be the first time it will be used in FAP sizes ranging from 30 up to 60. All fingerprint sensors must overcome challenges such as moist, sweaty fingers or dry, damaged fingers. Traditional Crossmatch optical fingerprint scanners, such as the Guardian®, incorporate moisture discriminating optics and silicone pads to solve these challenges. Moisture or dryness affect capacitance differently. The TFT sensors in the Nomad line are able to adjust sensitivity to a wide range of finger conditions to acquire the best image.”Our approach to TFT sensing reduces the challenges found with other forms of thin film technology,” said Crossmatch SVP Engineering and Operations, Jeff Parker. “For example, optical TFT approaches are subject to negative impacts from bright outdoor environments. In contrast, capacitive TFT is impervious to sunlight and performs well in a variety of field conditions.”TFT sensors include arrays of semi-conductive field-effect transistors. Capacitors, dielectric layers and metallic contacts are laid down in thin films over a glass substrate until there are hundreds of thousands of individual pixels that can each measure and report voltage levels. When subjects place one or more fingers on the sensor, their fingers act as a second plate in a two-plate system. Fingerprint ridges and valleys are relatively large compared to the capacitors. Each finger contains between 100 and 200 fingerprint ridges and the sensing area for each finger contains more than 100,000 capacitors. Fingerprint ridges and valleys have different levels of capacitance and the individual pixels report values based on this. A highly accurate, highly contrasted image of a fingerprint emerges. Nomad modules and readers are made to be durable, and have been tested for one million touches. To achieve this, sensors are coated with a specialized mix of materials that allows the sensors to maintain the required capacitance, but also protects them to a 9H pencil hardness – making them similar to a cellphone screen in terms of scratch resistance.
