Canada's Saskatchewan province has selected Veridos Canada to produce its new driver's licences and provide an accompanying facial recognition solution.Following a selection made through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, Veridos Canada will begin card production services in April 2016.This move to facial recognition brings Saskatchewan in line with all other Canadian provinces that are using facial recognition technology in their driver's licensing programmes. The facial recognition system creates a numeric template of photo, and compares the numeric template of the new photo to the numeric template of the customer's previous one.The local government says the biometric system will protect Saskatchewan residents from identity theft and prevent people from obtaining multiple licences and/or ID cards. It will also improve road safety by preventing suspended drivers from using a false identity to get a licence.SGI's current five-year contract for driver's licence and identification card production expires at the end of March 2016.
