Despite uneven uptake of eIDs across EU nations, this decade is officially signposted as the “Digital Decade” in the European Digital Identity Framework. Member states are progressing towards the target of making all key public services and electronic health records accessible using an eID by 2030.

93% of the EU population currently have access to a digital identity and the digital wallet, incentivised for citizens to store all their credentials, is expected to encourage adoption.

Digital ID initiatives are time sensitive in the EU under the eIDAS regulation.

However, in a “business-as-usual” scenario, achieving 100% of digital public services for citizens and business by 2030 remains challenging.
