A professor with Texas State University has had a patent published for a method for identification using eye movements with liveness detection, as part of a project that has been underway for years.Filed by Oleg Komogortsev and published on 21 January, assistant professor of computer science at TSU, the patent envisions a biometric assessment that measures the eye movement of a subject. Komogortsev has been studying the technique since 2012.This technique inherently offers liveness detection because it is continuously making an assessment of whether the subject is alive based on the measured eye movement.The measurement also takes into account the subject's Oculomotor Plant Characteristics (OPC), brain performance represented by the Complex Eye Movement patterns (CEM), iris patterns, and periocular information.This is “a multi-modal method of assessing the identity of a person that includes measuring eye movement of the person and measuring characteristics of an iris or/and periocular information of a person”, writes the patent.”Based on measured eye movements, estimates may be made of characteristics of an oculomotor plant of the person, complex eye movement patterns representing brain's control strategies of visual attention, or both.”Complex eye movement patterns may include, for example, a scanpath of the person's eyes including a sequence of fixations and saccades. The person's identity may be assessed based on the estimated characteristics of the oculomotor plant, the estimated complex eye movement patterns, and the characteristics of the iris of the person or/and periocular information”.
