New York governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed implementing facial recognition tech across the city to boost security.He plans to install cameras, sensors, and facial recognition systems under the bridges and in the tunnels.In a post on the governor's website, he said “At each crossing, and at structurally sensitive points on bridges and tunnels, advanced cameras and sensors will be installed to read license plates and test emerging facial recognition software and equipment. These technologies will be applied across airports and transit hubs – including the Penn-Farley Complex – to ultimately develop one system-wide plan.””We're going to be using this in Penn-Farley and we also want to be testing it in bridges and crossings system,” he added.The technology will be placed around the state to identify and to capture terrorists/criminals, which is an increasing concern.Cuomo also wants to install color LED illumination of bridges and completely automated toll booths as part of his plans.However, not all local officials supported the biometrics plans – “It's troubling that we're one step closer to the world of 'Minority Report' without any discussion of the serious privacy concerns that are implicated by this plan,” Mariko Hirose, a senior staff attorney at the New York Civil Liberties Union, told Vocativ.
