Belfast-based biometric technology firm Lava Group has won a contract to provide access control solutions for a new prison currently being constructed in Cork. The contract, worth over £500,000 (US$786,000), will see the firm installing Lock Controllers throughout the prison, enabling a one platform system to control access.”It was fantastic for a small Northern Irish company to be considered for such a large contract in the security sector and in particular it was great to be recognised for our innovation, “Gareth Morrison, managing director of The Lava Group, told Planet Biometrics.”The new prison in Cork will lead the way in its use of biometric technology and to have our product feature as a part of that speaks volumes for the forward thinking nature of our solutions.”The prison is due to be completed by the end of 2015 and will represent an investment of approximately €40m (US$44 m) by the Irish Prison Service. The flagship project will feature some of the most modern security solutions available throughout the 168 cell build. The company has been developing software and technologies for the criminal justice market for 20 years.Morrison added: “Prior to winning this contract we spent 18 months on R&D to develop a product that would meet the demands of this prison. One of the most important factors for projects of this nature at the moment is that you can demonstrate that your product will produce significant cost savings and we were able to do this.Invest NI offered almost £50,000 of support towards the research and development of this product, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
