Switzerland, like the rest of the EU, is currently working towards a qualified e-ID system by 2026. In a statement in June 2024, an update on the e-ID Program stated the approach to digital identity strives to offer “strong privacy-preserving capabilities” as well as “the foundation for interoperability”.
Whilst in a test phase, e-ID is not expected to be implemented until 2026. The Confederation has not yet made its final decision on the technology used for the issuance of the e-ID, but remains transparent about the current working hypothesis for the “underlying trust infrastructure”, calling for businesses to decide what “capability or format should be prioritised for their use case”.
