Estonia readies itself to introduce a mobile digital ID in the summer which will align with eIDAS 2.0 regulations for interoperability. The eIDAS regulation issues guidance on the provision of digital trust services, which align data interoperability in terms of security and privacy on a European level.

The focus on interoperability for Estonia’s ID to expand authentication to allow access more of the government’s services. Estonian citizens will be offered new eID to verify their identity in transactions with the government and private sector. Originally due to launch in January 2023, the pilot of mRiik scanned documents that could not be used as legal identification. The regulation was also far behind the state of proceedings to support data used for mobile identity verification.

Estonia founded a national digital identification system in 2002 based on the mandatory ID card.

Before the summer launch of mRiik, the government is pursuing a second development pilot, whilst adjusting regulation for technical interoperability across the e-government ecosystem and Europe.
