Nearly a third of Americans plan on avoiding online shopping this holiday season due to the threat of having their credit card information stolen, according to a new survey report released today by biometric technology startup Veridium. The company's survey found that an additional 14% of respondents say that they'll shop online less this year due to the threat. In a blog post by Veridium's CTO, John Callahan, called New Survey Pinpoints Serious Concerns Over the Safety of Online Spending, he said: “Americans are understandably nervous about using their credit card online given how easily the card number, expiration date and 4 digit code on the back of the card are compromised and the low barrier to entry for fraudsters using that information to spend big online.”Callahan added that the security of the US payment infrastructure is substantially outdated in most cases, given the ability to check biometrics using smartphones is available.”Both merchants and the financial services industry have every reason to make strong customer authentication (SCA) for online payments a priority next year to stop losses from fraud and to restore consumer confidence.”
