Visitors to the United Kingdom who plan to stay more than six months will now be issued with biometric resident permits (BRPs) from March instead of traditional paper visas.Rather than being issued with a visa vignette in passports, migrants will be issued with a short-term validity “travel” vignette which enables them to collect a BRP within 10 days of arrival. The BRP cards are secure documents that store fingerprints, photograph data and immigration status which were introduced as the result of European Union legislation. The permit is a polycarbonate standard sized (86mm x 54mm) card that looks similar to biometric residence permits issued by other EU countries and which has a machine readable zone. The UK government wants employers and landlords to increasingly refer to BRPs in job or housing checks, to cut down on illegal migration.Other security features on the card include a two-colour Ultra Violet design, Dynaprint and Kinegram lettering.
