When interoperable pathways connecting identities, software and supply chains are broken, threats can transcend ecosystems. The Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2026 reveals security outcomes that are closely tied to interconnected technologies, systems and supply chains.

AI accelerates the future of cybersecurity to support with detection, analysis and automation, but also shapes how attacks are developed.

Compressing attack timelines from days to minutes, artificial intelligence is lowering the cost and entry barriers for advanced cyber operations. In this time of interconnected risk, organisations must assess dependencies across interoperable ecosystems and focus on resilience as threats no longer emerge from individuals technologies or vulnerabilities.

The report states that “the organisations best positioned for the future will not necessarily be those with the most data, the largest security teams, or the most advanced tools. They will be the organisations that can understand their ecosystems, manage dependencies, adapt quickly, and make confident decisions amid change”.

Agentic systems are beginning to automate more of the attack lifecycle. Overall, cybercrime has evolved “beyond individual actors and isolated campaigns” with identity operations remaining the leading entry point for modern attacks across human accounts and non-human identities. Attackers increasingly rely on password sprays, Adversary-in-the-Middle (AiTM) phishing, and token theft rather than traditional endpoint malware to blend into legitimate user behaviour.

Organisational resilience must be marked by visibility, preparedness, governance and adaptability.

As cyber threats shift toward automated identity operations and ecosystem-wide dependencies, developing resilient defence strategies across human and non-human identities will take centre stage at Identity Week Europe 2027 at the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam. Industry leaders will gather to address these critical supply chain vulnerabilities, exploring the digital frameworks, access controls, and authentication tools required to secure connected ecosystems.
