Senior Sri Lankan officials have confirmed that the country has implemented a fingerprint data sharing network to aid law enforcement.The new system will facilitate automatic fingerprint processing with all police stations and divisions island-wide.The automated fingerprint network was developed jointly by the University of Colombo School of Computing and the Forensic Fingerprint Expert of Police.At its inception, the system covered 42 polic divisions and linked the Criminal Investigations Department, Fraud Investigation Bureau , Police Narcotics Bureau and the Terrorist Investigation Department.Speaking to reporters, Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon praised the new system saying it would help avoid detaining innocent individuals.Sagala Ratnayake, the Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development, added that Sri Lanka was far behind the rest of the world and it was time such a system was introduced in the country
