Taiwanese media has reported that Apple has selected fingerprint sensor components developed by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company for its iPhone 6s model.Industry sources told Digitimes that the upcoming iPhone orders will be deployed at its 12-inch wafer fabrication plants, using 65nm process technology. In response, TSMC told the newspaper that the company does not talk about any customer engagements. For existing iPhone models, fingerprint sensors are being built using TSMC's 0.18-micron process at the foundry's 8-inch facilities, the sources noted.Apple's Touch ID fingerprint scanner was first introduced in the iPhone 5s series, which helped drive the market for fingerprint-enabled smartphones.Orders for fingerprint sensors for use in Apple's existing iPhone models demand 30,000-50,000 8-inch wafers a month, the sources disclosed.
