Pittsburgh's Monongahela Valley Hospital has deployed fingerprint registration for patient check-ins to improve medical record security.Developed by Ohio-based software company CrossChx Inc, the system scans patients' index fingers to analyze patterns and ridges, and fingerprints are stored as biometric templates. The system has been used by nearly 14 million patients in two years, according to the manufacturer, and patients enrolled in a SafeChx hospital system can also easily register at any health care facility that uses it.The firm says that advantages to this new technology include faster patient registration, easier access to patient medical records, quick and accurate patient identification in emergencies and decreased risk of duplicate or incorrect records.
