The Pakistan Post Office has been tasked with launching a biometric welfare system in the country to distribute funds to Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) beneficiaries and pensioners. The first phase of the initiative will involve a mobile biometric service that will see post office staff visit home and distribute funds there. In a second phase, the department is going to launch an ATM network. The initiatives are hope to ensure transparency in a system which is often accused of corruption.Currently, BISP beneficiaries and pensioners have to wait in long queues where they are often targeted by con-men, reports local media.”Pakistan Post realizing the situation, is to embark on a reform agenda which would not only help the poor and aged to receive their money at their door step but would generate handsome money for the department,” an unnamed official told Daily Pakistan.
