The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in Pakistan plans to introduce biometrics to its welfare payments to improve security and ensure benefits are reaching the right recipients.BISP is introducing biometric based payment systems in Multan, Mianwali, Mirpur Khas and Sanghar for beneficiaries with smart cards, Naeem Anwar , the Director General of BISP Sindh in a statement on Friday.Using biometrics in the payment system will prevent middlemen from taking cuts out of payments, and help the many BISP beneficiaries who were illiterate and unable to operate ATMs, he added.BISP currently awards financial support of Rs4,700 (US$44) to 5.3 million beneficiaries on a quarterly basis via the Benazir Debit Card (BDC).
