Pakistan's central bank has extended a deadline for banks to install biometric branch enrolment devices by three months.The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) informed banks that the deadline for installation of biometric devices is now 31 March, 2016.The move is part of SBP efforts to strengthen regulations regarding anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism.The SBP has set a deadline of 31 December in March for banks and development financial institutions (DFIs) to use biometric technology at branch level for identity verification.Financial institutions must now only issue an initial deposit receipt for new accounts after completing necessary due diligence, including Nadra verification through verisys or biometric technology.”A temporary account number shall be generated, which will be validated after completion of due diligence process,” the SBP said. “No transaction in the account, issuance of cheque book / ATM Card or any other instrument is allowed until completion of the verification of identity of the customer.”
