Omani officials have confirmed that ePassports offering enhanced security features will be launched by the country this month.The ePassports have several security elements incorporated with high security standards like Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and other features, with a chip storing store the passport-holder's personal information, photo, biometric information and digital security featuresThe country launched the project in April 2014 to comply with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards."The ePassport will provide a citizen with enhanced protection since it cannot be forged," an A ROP official told the Times of Oman.The passport will also be integrated with e-gates in Muscat International Airport.An electronic visa for expats was launched in mid-2014. It aims to simplify the process of online application without the need to go to the ROP.In February, French company Gemalto revealed that it was providing the Royal Oman Police with an end-to-end electronic passport solution for the Sultanate.The firm said its turnkey solution would encompass Gemalto's ICAO-compliant Sealys ePassport documents, and a full Coesys solution suite to enroll citizens, personalize and issue secure documents. The multi-year contract also covered training, support and maintenance services.
