Norwegian fingerprint sensor firm NEXT Biometrics has received an initial US$100,000 from a client operating within a new field for the company. NEXT Biometrics says the order is for consultancy, with NEXT providing high level expertise for an undisclosed application within a new field.Tore Etholm-Idsøe, CEO of NEXT Biometrics, said, “The NEXT development order application involves a small device in need of a high quality sensor at a low cost. By supporting our new customer we will be helping it create a new and exciting high volume market segment.”On 29 January, Etholm-Idsøe had said that an “Apple effect” was leading to orders within new segments for his firm's solutions. In a statement, the company said that in January alone, six new players placed orders for NEXT sensors to be integrated in new small mass market product formats. The products included payment-, home- and smartphone-related devices, with the customers ordering SDK's and sensor samples as part of their product development process. They unnamed customers all had requirements for large, high performance sensors with all their products planning to launch in the second half of 2015 or the first half of 2016.Etholm-Idsoe said: “The 'Apple Effect' is starting to make a significant impact in multiple new market segments. The general acceptance of fingerprinting is increasing fast. All of the above customers have made it clear that they need the quality of a large area sensor at a very low price. ߪ These six new projects each represent 6-digit volume potential.”
