Newark, New Jersey, has become the latest US city to launch a municipal identification program that will be open to all residents, including immigrants.Newark's ID card will serve as a proof of identity and residency and provides access to city agencies, schools and cultural institutions, officials said. Mayor Ras Baraka signed the legislation Monday. The cards will begin as a pilot program on July 1, then open citywide on Aug. 1.In January, neighbouring New York launched the country's largest municipal card programme, with facial recognition and other technology used to identify cardholders for the multiple services it will cover. However, that card too has raised questions over what breeder documents will be used to validate identities.
