The state government for Lagos in Nigeria has launched a biometric verification exercise for pensioners designed to prevent fraud and ensure welfare is reaching the elderly.Dr. Akinola Benson-Oke, state commissioner, Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, said this week that the exercise would contribute greatly to effective pensions administration in the state.To enrol, pensioners simply need to bring ID cards to verification centres in order to revalidate their records.”This initiative demonstrates, once again, the commitment of the state government to ensuring that resources are prudently managed for the benefit of all,” said Benson-Oke.The biometric process, dubbed 'I'M Alive' by the state administration, will help distribute funds amounting to N6.5 billion (US$32 million).Benson-Oke said that “I'M Alive, is an initiative of the state Civil Service Pensions Office directed at enrolling their bio data and fingerprints of pensioners under the old scheme of 'Pay As You Go' in order to ascertain those entitled to receive payments under the scheme.”
