Italy has officially launched a new visa for digital nomads, starting April 5, 2024. The visa is designed for “highly skilled” non-EU workers engaged in remote work for a non-Italian company or as self-employed individuals. With this visa, Italy opens its doors to a new wave of workers who blend professionalism with the passion for travel.

Candidates must demonstrate an annual income of at least €27,000 and provide proof that they have been employed in remote work for at least six months prior to the application. Additionally, mandatory health insurance cover for a minimum of one year and evidence of housing in Italy are preconditions.

The Italian government specifies that applicants must not be tax residents in Italy at the time of applying, but must become tax-residents upon acceptance. The digital nomad visa allows a stay up to one year, with the option for renewal. Notably, this visa does not impose entry quotas and interested individuals can apply directly to the Italian Embassy in their home country or country of legal residence.

The Italian Embassies abroad will be responsible for assessing the visa applications based on income, health insurance, accommodation, and work experience. Once approved, newcomers will receive a residence permit labelled “digital nomad – remote worker.” This permit enables them to live in Italy, and they will be provided with a tax ID code and, for self-employed workers, an Italian VAT number.

Italy also permits the reunification of families, allowing digital nomads to bring their families with them on a corresponding residence permit.

The Ministerial Decree of February 2024, which established this innovative visa, lays out comprehensive procedures for ensuring compliance with the country’s tax and contribution regulations. It marks a significant step by Italy to join a growing list of countries that recognise and accommodate the lifestyle of digital nomads and remote workers.

For further details about the application process and additional requirements, potential applicants are encouraged to visit the nearest Italian Embassy. Italy now awaits its new class of digital nomads ready to combine their professional pursuits with the richness of Italian culture and lifestyle.
