Hungarian officials have confirmed that the country will launch a biometric eID cards which can also be used for electronic signatures on e-government services.Local media reports that a social consultation will precede the drafting of the relevant law before the cards are introduced next January.Replacing the current ID card system, the new eIDs will be used for tax and social insurance. It will also incorporate a citizen's health insurance number as well as being suitable for gaining access to public transport.Hungary introduced biometric passports with a chip built in storing the holder's biometric data and a digital image in 2006.
