An amusement firm in Japan has developed facial recognition software that would warn the family of players addicted to gambling on pachinko machines, a game similar to pinball, if they are over indulging.Omron Amusement plans to work with Ma:sus, a facial recognition system already installed in many pachinko parlors for demographic purposes, on a solution that would recognise an individual gambler and register when he or she enters a parlour. The system can then calculate the frequency and length of the gambler's visits, and send a warning email cautioning against spending too much time there.Thirty million Japanese play pachinko and pachislo every year, dropping more than $200 billion in the machines. However, Pachinko's legal status as gaming rather than gambling means the industry remains largely unregulated.
