The EU and Kenya are doubling down on digital transformation, trade and investment opportunities in Africa, setting their commitments out today in Brussels and forming a pivotal partnership for Africa with the UK.

Under the Global Gateway, an investment strategy to support global challenges, they aim to boost the global competitiveness of digital transformation, edge closer to achieving sustainable goals and facilitating trade.

The objectives were laid out today by Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, who welcomed President of the Republic of Kenya William Ruto into the strategic discussions across priority areas such as addressing the data flow between partners and supporting digital identity to enable cross-border trade.

Kenya is building a national digital ID system and embedding DPI to modernise e-government services that benefit citizens.

Both countries stressed the importance of resolving trade issues but on digital policy, the EU proposed a deeper cooperation in AI, digital identity and connectivity.

They pledged €12 million to advance the digitalisation of land registration in Kenya, which would allow households, farmers and businesses to prove ownership. €1oo million will also be funnelled into strengthening the Digital Transformation Center in Kenya to support the digital transformation.
