Three airports addressed the infrastructure upgrades supporting touchless processing across the travel arena. Denver, Miami and Vancouver airport specialists converged ideas and led an insightful panel at Identity Week America all about their new tech pilots leveraging biometric technology, private wireless infrastructure, and security scanners.

To reduce queues and optimise its broader economic strategy,  we heard from Denver International Airport’s COO, Dave LaPorte, confirmed they are using full biometric facial matching for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at both arrival international customs processing and international departure gates to validate passengers departing the U.S.

Denver is also expanding facial verification to passenger biometric bag drops and integrating biometrics into secure internal employee portals.

Reducing line congestion directly lifts passenger experience and concessions revenue. Miami International Airport has equally driven higher throughput and smoother checkout operations with widespread passenger adoption of TSA touchless ID lanes. The implementation of touchless e-gates paired with latest Computed Tomography (CT) security scanners is improving Key Performance Indicators, said James Snowdon, who represents Canadian travel initiatives.

The panel agreed that the travel sector should strategically align on important metrics to reduce gate friction, leverage data insights and increase post-security concession revenue.

 YVR is pioneering self-sovereign digital identities for passenger boarding, supported by an established government trust framework where the government serves as the credential issuer. While initial pilots focused on international travel, Canada is preparing to roll out self-sovereign IDs to streamline the domestic travel market.

Snowdon warned that failing to form cross-sector partnerships creates costly operational challenges, whereas smooth processing grants passengers more post-security time in airport concourses.

Airports would not be able to scale efficient touchless experiences without wireless private network capability to process real-time data across large airport facilities. Maurice Jenkins, representing MIA, said they had deployed one of the largest wireless networks, enabling shared data insights that eliminate inefficiencies costing the industry millions of dollars annually.
