Liberian opposition party the Congress for Democratic Change has called for the government to implement plans for a biometric vote registry ahead of a national vote next year.Although the National Elections Commission asked the government earlier this year for US$24 million for a biometric voter registration, leaders have said the funding is not available. The CDC says the government need to reconsider this, as they believe it will eliminate 90% of possible fraud activities.”We are at the eve of 2017 — a year Liberia will be going to elections. The issue of election is so important that since 1944 when President Barclay turned over power to a new President, we have never witnessed such an opportunity and this will be the first time we will see a transition,” said Nathaniel McGill, chairman of the party.A separate body, the National Identification Registry (NIR) has been in discussion with the NEC over a biometric registration process. The NIR was established to handle issues of national identification with the issuance of biometric identification cards as one of its main objectives but ahead of the election.
