Indian tech manufacturer Datamini in cooperation with Intel and MAIT, has launched a budget tablet featuring a fingerprint scanner which could reduce the cost and improve the availability of government transactions.Called the Janunnati Pad, the device was conceived and developed under government's 'Make In India' initiative and is backed by MAIT, India's premier ICT hardware industry association. The integration of a fingerprint reader and magnetic card reader gives it the capability to authenticate mobile transactions such as welfare payments in remote areas. The tablet can as a result verify identities against the country's vast, biometrics-backed Aadhaar identity system. This means it can be deployed in the 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana' (PMJDY), to extend banking services to the rural and urban poor; make wage payments linked to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS); deliver subsidised foodgrains to BPL families via the e-PDS (Public Distribution System); monitor public health services under the National Health Mission (NHM) and so on.Debjani Ghosh, Intel VP said the next stage of the product could see integration with Intel RealSense camera for facial recognition which could raise the adoptability of the device.
