Palm biometrics have never been trialled by Mastercard for customer verification until now. The biometric modality will be adopted and expand Mastercard’s Biometric Checkout Program further into Latin America if the in-store pilot goes well at Tienda Inglesa’s Red Expres in Uruguay.

The payments provider is calling on partners Ingenico, Fulcrum Biometrics, Fujitsu Frontech, and Scanntech to facilitate secure payments infrastructure that successfully match customers’ data with their biometrics at branches.

The process expedites quicker checkouts and prevents long queues forming.

“Consumers are looking for more choice in how they pay, and thanks to our collaborative innovation, we can deliver more seamless, secure payment experiences”, said Federico Cofman, Cluster Lead for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, Mastercard.

Palm biometrics overtakes the level of assurance with some other ID verification methods. The payments system which processes palm biometrics will be delivered by Ingenico and Fulcrum Biometrics; this development has galvanised other interest from vendors who wish to bid their technologies for contracts with Mastercard.

“We believe that biometrics will create an easier and more secure environment for everyone around the world, in our ever-expanding digital society. I’m very happy to see our PalmSecure and Fulcrum Biometrics technology shaping Ingenico’s next generation of payment solutions through the Mastercard BCO program,” stated Takahiro Matsumura, Corporate Vice President of Fujitsu Frontech Limited and Global Head of PalmSecure Business.
