Arizona is among the first states in the country to transition beyond the digital driver licence (mDL) into full-fledged mobile vehicle documentation, officially updating its proprietary Arizona Wallet app. They have allowed residents to upload and store their official vehicle registration, title information, and insurance details directly onto their smartphones.

Arizona is no stranger to digital identity. The state has consistently pioneered the space, becoming the first to integrate state IDs with Apple Wallet in 2022, followed by rollouts for Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet in 2023.

However, generic tech-company wallets are currently limited by international standards primarily focused on identity verification. To circumvent these limitations, ADOT collaborated with tech firm AstreaX to launch the standalone Arizona Wallet app earlier this year. This dedicated state portal allows for a much broader ecosystem of verified credentials.

“ADOT MVD is happy to once again help get Arizona residents out of the line and safely on the road,” said Michael Cryderman, ADOT MVD Director.” “Arizona Wallet is another example of ADOT MVD being a leader in offering additional convenient functionality through smartphones and securely conducting business in this digital age.”

What the update does is turn the app into vehicle management tool rather than just a passive document viewer. Drivers can securely view their registration and title status anywhere, authenticated via their phone’s built-in biometrics.

Because the Arizona Wallet is fully compliant with North American implementation guidelines and international standards, it is built to be recognised and used nationally, and even internationally, going forward. Currently, Arizonans can securely present their digital ID at over 250 TSA airport security checkpoints, on the AZMVDNow.gov portal, and at participating retailers using the Smart ID Verifier app.

However, state officials are urging drivers not to throw away their physical paperwork just yet.

Despite the cutting-edge tech, ADOT explicitly warns that drivers must continue to keep physical registration and insurance cards inside their vehicles for other everyday scenarios, most notably during routine traffic stops with law enforcement, as roadside reader technology continues to catch up.

The Arizona Wallet app is currently available for download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. To activate the vehicle features, users must first follow the prompts to upload and verify their physical Arizona driver’s license or state ID within the app.
