US Naval Submarine Base New London has joined other Navy Region Mid-Atlantic commands in implementing the Defense Biometrics Identification System or DBIDS at all gates.DBIDS is a global database which will streamline the flow of information to the gate-guard who is determining an individual's authorized access to SUBASE.Using the system, a gate-guard can use a hand-held wireless scanner to instantly identify who the person is and whether or not he or she is allowed on base.”What people need to realize about DBIDS is that it is not just a base system, it's global. If an arrest warrant is issued in Virginia, it will pop up, or flag, on the scanner,” said SUBASE DBIDS manager, James Kelley of the Security Department, to The Dolphin newspaper.”Also, if a particular person is barred or suspended from access to SUBASE, that will flag at the gates at Naval Station Norfolk and it will also give the reason for that suspension.”
