Ride-sharing firms operating in Austin, Texas that decided to follow rules on fingerprint checks after Uber departed are so far meeting the requirements. The firms are meeting a benchmark that requires companies to have at least 50 percent of its hours or miles driven by fingerprinted drivers.Revealing the results in a memo, the Austin Transportation Department (ATD) says staff has taken several steps to help companies comply with city code.ATD has been contacting companies to verify their understanding of the city code, providing ordinance checklists, suspending operating authority of companies that didn't meet monthly data reporting requirements and hosting driver fairs to connect drivers to TNCs licensed in Austin. They also received council approval of a city ordinance that spells out for drivers and companies what criminal offenses could result in denying a person from becoming a driver for a TNC or ground transportation service in Austin.Earlier this year, Uber and Lyft decided to leave the city after a public vote approved measures that required transport firms to conduct fingerprint-based background checks on all drivers. At the time, Uber staff said this put unnecessary pressure on its drivers.
