Nearly half of the 6.1 million Tanzanians registered for eID cards have had their card issued since the project began in February 2013, according to officials.Acting Director General of the National Identification Authority (NIDA), Joseph Makani, revealed that 2.5 million have had cards issued at the ID4Africa event which is being held in the country.Makani noted that the identification process is still facing obstacles."We are faced with a challenge proving identities as to who is who when registering; the challenge prompts us to undergo rigorous verification process on an applicant before an ID is issued," he told the meeting, reported Daily News. However, he added that major financial institutions are interested in using the IDs to address identity challenges in the financial and banking sector.Tanzania's national ID project is being deployed by Malaysia's IRIS Corporation.Earlier in the day, Minister for Home Affairs, Mathias Chikawe, said challenges facing Africa such as domestic crime and international terrorism could be resolved through identity programmes based on technological solutions.
