PARIS – The Spanish National Police Force has launched a new version of an operating system for the national ID document in conjunction with the FNMT-RCM (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre, the Royal Mint of Spain). Revealed at Cartes 2015, the operating system on a unique dual interface chip permits both the functionality of the national identity document (authentication & digital signature) and the passport or travel document. Thanks to NFC tech, the documents may be signed on mobile devices. According to the FNMT, this is the first national id document to be developed in a dual chip, meaning that the signature may be taken via a contact-based chip or a contactless chip. In other cases, the electronic signature is taken solely via a contact-based chip. In January, Spain launched a new national identity card featuring NFC connectivity and a faster microchip that powers electronic signature capabilities. The card, known as the DNI 3.0, uses NFC to link to an online platform on smartphones or tablets with different mobile applications to manage services and features.
