The South Australia police department (SAPOL) has updated a $1.5 million Australian dollars (US$1.3 million) tender for a facial recognition system, saying that off-the-shelf solutions which do not integrate with its current workflow system will not be acceptable.Last December, the department revealed that it was seeking an integrated mobile and desktop solution that would use facial recognition technology for forensic, investigative and front-line policing operations. It has since clarified that the solution needs to be designed specifically designed for use with Australian policing procedures and workflow.”There are various Facial Recognition systems available in the market providing high levels of accuracy and world leading facial recognition systems. However, to our knowledge they provide very little or no work flow or applications that are specifically designed for policing work in Australia,” wrote the department.”There are several products that can be purchased from overseas vendors, however, these are designed to meet the specific requirements of legislation and operations peculiar to those jurisdictions”.SAPOL previously said that the agreement reached with a vendor will be for three years with an option to extend for a further two-year term.
