The Romanian government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Mastercard to develop a digital wallet solution by December which is built on interoperability.

Months ago, they commenced an interoperability testing phase and alongside the expertise of authorities, developers, and wallet providers, integrated their systems to rehearse real-life use cases, as countries flesh out use of wallets under compliance of the European digital identity framework.

Romania’s initiative is exploring implementation of the European digital identity wallet in Romania. Like elsewhere, the digital wallet should enable citizens to use their electronic identity for many services, including to set up banking accounts. The partnership of Mastercard Europe with plenty of experience in the payments sphere and digital identity represents a basis for technical cooperation.

The event which took place on 17-18 March was organised by the Cloud Signature Consortium, which advocates for building a new standard for cloud-based digital signatures in wallets.

A leading bank in Romania, Banca Transilvania, and BPC worked together on one of the first pilots for the EUDI Wallet in Romania.
