Biometric technology is infiltrating the public sector in India. Pensioners enrolled under the Employees Pension Scheme, which was introduced in 1995, can now submit an online Jeevan Pramaan Patra life certificate which leverages facial recognition and brings age-defining technology to older people’s lives.
The transition has not been without a few small knock-backs as many pensioners have experienced teething problems accessing their biometrics due to age or health. Despite the scheme being introduced to digitalise and streamline the procurement process of getting a life certificate, many pensioners have been obliged to visit facilities in-person to confirm their identity.
“The DLC through face authentication technique is a breakthrough technology that will reduce pensioners’ dependence on external bio-metric devices and make the process more accessible and affordable, thus ensuring ease of living for all pensioners”, the release said.
In a tweet, The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation confirmed that submissions can be made on the ‘FaceRD’ mobile app which is available to download on the Apple Play store. Even pensioners who live abroad will be able to submit digital life certificate applications with facial biometrics.
