Notorious cybercrime group, Shiny Hunters, say they are responsible for holding private data of around 38,000 people ransom in a serious data breach on the FBI systems.
Shiny Hunters, the usual suspects for numerous data breaches, have shouted proudly about yet another compromising situation stealing thousands of files. They have shared ‘proof of life’ of the data with 404 media.
Rafe Piling, Director of Sophos’ Counter Threat Unit has responded to the attack and believes it’s likely to be a retaliation for what ShinyHunters see as a misrepresentation of them in an FBI public service announcement issued in May 2026. As they have garnered a reputation for orchestrating bold and reckless attacks, targeting the FBI is just on brand.
FBI bureau staff and applicants have been caught up in the breach which has stolen every agent’s name, role, badge number, and personal details. FBI retaliated promising to aggressively investigate the matter which could have massive ramifications for national security and counterintelligence implications, and sharing of U.S intelligence insight to foreign agencies.
Moreover, other hacker groups have previously used intimidation tactics using phone data.

A highly irresponsible move that could have enduring consequences for those affected. ShinyHunters is a prolific cybercriminal group linked to a string of high-profile incidents, including attacks on Canvas and Rockstar Games. Targeting the FBI is exactly the kind of audacious, reckless behaviour that has come to define this group.”
