An European Citizens’ initiative has been set up calling for the creation of a European Digital Space for sovereign artificial intelligence, an EU framework to safeguard high-level digital spaces and testing environments for ethical AI.

The initiative proposes to the Commission that the framework should be taken at European level to negotiate with ISO and ICANN in protection of the namespace, .IA.

This should create sovereignty for European AI domains and for the EU’s planned “Sovereign Digital Identity” system under eIDAS 2.0 Regulation.

Following the registration, the organisers have six months to open the 12-month period of signature collection. If an ECI receives at least one million valid statements of support during that time, with minimum numbers reached in at least seven Member States, the Commission is required to react, and decide what, if any, action it will take in response to the initiative, justifying its decision.
