Nepal is set to replace paper driving licences with new smart card-based documents in December.According to the Kathmandu Post, the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) will distribute 160,000 smart licences in the Kathmandu Valley in the first phase.The new licences will contain information on the driver's identity and vehicle registration number. Motorists will be able to upload their information online, but will have to visit Transport Management offices to have their picture taken and fingerprint and signature recorded. The new documents will need to be replaced every 10 years.India-based Madras Security Printers is preparing the cards and Learners Tech is acting as the local representative. The Asian Development Bank has provided 150 million rupees of assistance to develop the new technology.
