Microsoft has noted in a blog post that facial recognition technology developed by NEC that features on the Xbox's Kinect camera could be used by retailers to personalise retail experiences.”The NEC Biometric interface with Kinect Camera system provides demographic and face recognition services to a Kinect enabled application. Retailers can use this information for analysis and for providing the customer with a more personal selling experience”, wrote the computing giant. This suggests that retailers could use the Kinect hardware to identify customers and then send the data to an “enabled application” that analyse their behaviour. The Kinect-enabled application could alert staff that the store is getting a repeat customer, or offer tailored discount deals.NEC noted last week that it plans to showcase the Kinect solution at the National Retail Federation conference this week in New York.”NEC has collaborated with Microsoft Corp. on an exciting new retail signage solution that combines NEC face recognition technology with Microsoft's Kinect camera system to create a next-generation shopping experience.”NEC added that the solution serves up digital retail signage based upon an individual's age and gender, and archives in-store demographic and engagement data in the cloud for later analysis.
