The Metropolitan Police Office in Kathmandu, capital of Himalayan nation Nepal, has launched a biometric database of know criminals to improve the efficiency of its police force.The biometric Accused Data Record (ADR), which lists persons arrested for involvement in criminal offenses in the city, has launched with 4,739 records, reports The Himalayan.The database will store electronic images of fingerprints, photographs and information on the type of criminal offenses committed.”The move will definitely help keep track of persons involved in criminal activities”, wrote the newspaper in an editorial. “This system must be applied in other parts of the country so that the criminal justice system can be strengthened in a free manner.At a nationwide level, the Crime Investigation Department of Nepal Police maintains a computerised fingerprint images of more than 9,500 people. The AFIS is a biometric identification methodology that uses digital imaging technology to obtain, store and analyse fingerprint data.
