Tokyo plans to accelerate moves towards implementing facial recognition at all airports, with a view towards boosting security ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games.A facial recognition system linked to the ePassport control system at Narita, Haneda and other Japanese airports will match facial data with terrorist watchlists. The plan was revealed as part of a 300 million yen ($2.69 million) budget request by the Justice Ministry to install the system at all immigration sections at airports nationwide.Facial recognition has been chosen because it is more likely that authorities store this biometric data from terrorists as opposed to fingerprints.Foreign visitors to Japan rose some 39% in 2015, reaching a record 19.68 million.
