Norwegian fingerprint sensor manufacturer IDEX has revealed that is showcasing a “unique in-glass” fingerprint sensor at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.Following an in-glass swipe sensor demonstration at MWC last year, IDEX will this year show enhanced versions with superior biometric performance.”To sense through glass is the holy grail for mobile applications. The look and feel of having the sensor as an integral part of the mobile's cover glass is unmatched. Most importantly the biometric performance from our in glass sensor is vastly superior compared to sensing under the glass, suffering none of the blurring or fading caused by sensing from underneath glass,” says Dr. Hemant Mardia, CEO of IDEXThe thickness of an actual mobile cover glass can cause severe distortion for most fingerprint sensing solutions and degradation of performance. A typical mobile cover glass is 500 or 700 microns to deliver the physical strength needed for everyday use, and this distance distorts the fingerprint image which must be resolved to at least 75 microns for good quality imaging.Thinner cover glass below 400 microns does not have the structural integrity required in a mobile device. The IDEX glass demonstrator sense through either 500 micron or 700 micron “with uncompromised high performance and reliability”, said the firm.IDEX has been developing a sensor solution for mass production processes with key partners in order to support high volume opportunities. IDEX is extending this technology to in glass touch sensors.
