Goodix founder and CEO David Zhang has told Chinese media that fingerprint sensors will be embedded across an entire touchscreen panel – a concept based on his firm's latest sensor innovations.Speaking to EE Times China, Zhang said that advantage of his firm's Invisible Touch Fingerprint Sensor (IFS), which won two Consumer Electronics Show technology innovation awards in November, is that fingerprint recognition will be possible with various fingers anywhere on the screen. He added, however, that in the first stage, fingerprint identification will be done at the bottom of the screen instead of the special capacitance area. Its advantage is a simpler ID process. On the future uses on sensors, Zhang said: “The most important function for fingerprinting on a handset is mobile payments.””Alipay has moved more quickly, and it is now developing related standards for fingerprinting. However, Tencent is also working on this, and their fingerprint solution can be used on the iPhone for microcredit and payments but not on Android.”Supporting fingerprint payments on Android is actually quite complex. Alipay requires each business and each handset model to undergo debugging, which is very time-consuming.”From this perspective, there is a conflict between financial institutions and mobile phone makers. The handset makers want a good user experience, and the financial institutions want security. There needs to be some balance between false acceptance rate (FAR) and false rejection rate (FRR) indicators, which are like a seesaw game, one lifting at the expense of the other.”Apple currently requires a FAR ratio of 1/50000, and Alipay is following Apple's standards.”Our position is to be neutral and cooperative, but we will not support the trusted execution environment (TEE) standard. But we can do whatever our customers demand. That includes Trustonic, Watchdata, Neusoft and Tianyu. In addition, we also support Doov's phone that uses the Cloud OS”.Zhang noted that Qualcomm's platform has its own TEE system, and MediaTek's reference design uses Trustronic.”If they aren't satisfied with a reference design, customers often choose a TEE system they prefer”.
