An influx of asylum seekers managed to cross borders to reach Gardaí, in Ireland without possessing legal identity documents, according to a Freedom of Information request obtained by Newstalk.
In the first part of 2023, the alarming number of people who successfully arrived in Ireland without identification stood at 1,432, indicating a major lapse in security in recent months.
Simon Harris, Justice Minister at the Department of Justice, admitted: “I accept that we’ve seen an uptick again in recent weeks”.
“We have started the process of Gardaí being located abroad, working with airlines, checking documents” across the whole travel journey between airlines and connecting airports.
This figure has reduced significantly since last year when 5,000 asylum seekers were estimated to have travelled to Ireland with false passport or no documentation at all.
